Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students attend a K-5 neighborhood school in a small town. We are a Title I school and all students receive free breakfast and free lunch. My students come from low-income backgrounds. Yet, even though they do not have much money and resources, my students have a great passion for education! As with all students, my babies have diverse learning styles. Some are visual learners, some are auditory learners, some learn best through reading/writing, and some are kinesthetic learners.

My students love to watch, listen, and participate in hands-on lessons.

My Project

Because my students live in an underserved community, they typically have deficits in their basic foundational reading skills.

Our school focuses on daily phonics and small group instruction to ensure that students will learn to read.

When students are learning to read, they start by learning letters and sounds. We teach phonics and reading strategies every morning. The students need independent time to apply the skills we are teaching them so that the letter-sound knowledge becomes automatic. Students need to match pictures to letters and letter sounds, use letters to create words, and ultimately form sentences. Magnetic letters are proven to accelerate student learning because they need to touch, feel, and identify how letters are formed. These literacy centers will provide my students with​ the opportunity to apply their learning to independent practice.
