Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the heart of Washington, DC, my students represent the diversity and resiliency that have always made our country great. Within a school that is approximately 52% Latino and 42% Black, my students learn about acceptance and tolerance both from the content in their classes and from one another in our richly diverse community. 100% of the student body at my Title I school qualify for free and reduced price lunch services, and a significant portion also qualify for homelessness services.
My students show me every day that, despite the significant challenges they face, each of them has the capacity to question, challenge and change the world.
With your support and investment, my students can continue to reach their full potential on whatever path they choose. They can enter middle school confident that they are fully prepared to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Finally, my students will be confident that they have access to all of the resources and support that they need, and more importantly, that they deserve.
My Project
Phonics mastery is an essential prerequisite to building reading comprehension and language development. For my students who are learning English, these skills are all the more essential and urgent. However, many phonics educational resources are not developmentally appropriate or engaging for fifth-grade learners.
My culturally and linguistically diverse students inspire me every day, and I know with the right resources, they will meet our ambitious goals.
The resources included in this project will transform my phonics instruction. English language development activity cards will provide me and my students with ample, differentiated resources to ensure we have consistently well-developed lessons. Letter tiles will equip students with the tools to experiment with language and build foundational skills. Finally, teaching tubs will provide tactile support for mastering challenging sounds.
