I'm a special education teacher at a high poverty school and work with 3rd and 4th grade students in a 15:1:1 setting (15 or fewer students, 1 teacher, 1 teaching assistant). I work with them on all subjects, but we're working especially hard this year on foundational math skills. Building our basic number sense, developing fact fluency, and understanding how numbers work will make future math skills more attainable.
My students are sweet, funny, hard-working kids who need a little more time and repetition to make things stick.
Many of them have experienced some real hardships, but they make me laugh every day, and it's really a joy to work with them. I can't imagine doing anything else!
My Project
My students are generally working 1-2 levels below grade level. Most of them are still very much at the concrete phase of math - they need things to touch and manipulate and they need visual representations of numbers. They also need a lot of practice and repetition before things stick. We have a few activities we love, but practicing the same skills over and over day after day can get well, a little boring. The resources I'm requesting include some new manipulatives as well as a number of math games so we can continue reinforcing our number sense, visual discrimination, addition and subtraction facts within 20, and counting to 100, but in new and engaging ways. A few of the games also introduce multiplication and division, things we'll be working on more next year. Finally, there are a couple of books mixed in to help me figure out how to best use some of these new tools.
My students have shown a lot of growth this year and are really starting to believe in themselves as learners.
These games will inject some new fun into our routine, carrying them through the end of this school year and into the next one. Additionally, all of these resources will be shared with other special education teachers with students working on similar skills. Your generosity will benefit many students throughout our building!
