Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I service a group of energetic, enthusiastic and curious K-8 students. My students are a mix of Boston natives, 1st and 2nd generation immigrants and newcomers to this country! They receive small group, pullout support in order to mediate targeted learning gaps and service the specific needs of their individual plans. They are a driven group of young people who appreciate the small group support they receive.

My students attend a predominantly low income, high needs school that, only a few years ago, was classified as among the lowest 20% performing schools in the state.

These past 3 years, with hard work and dedication, the school has made remarkable improvements. My charge, as their service provider, is to make sure that my students with special needs don’t fall through the cracks.

My students are capable of making educational growth at the same pace as their general education peers. However, one of the biggest barriers I’ve seen to their growth and advancement is access to appropriate tools and supplies that supplement the curriculum and accommodate their learning disabilities. Join me as I work to give my students the love and support they need and deserve!

My Project

For the students in my intervention groups, I am very intentional about how they are learning the skills they have historically struggled with. Because the students in these groups are multiple steps behind grade level, the activities we work on need to be engaging. The Lakeshore math games in this project cover a wide range of topics that build foundational skills for my elementary students. The colors, imagery and themes used in these games play an important role in making sure the concepts stick for learners who are struggling. My goal is to develop a strong library of engaging and meaningful number sense and computation activities to strengthen and support what I am already teaching.

Students that I work with have to not only overcome academic barriers but the stigmas associated with struggling in math.

The math games that I am asking for will not only reinforce important skills but will help them associate fun and positivity with learning. I strive to make my classroom a safe, engaging and comfortable place to learn. These Lakeshore math games will play an important role in building and maintaining this environment for my students.
