Fun With Fractions

My Students

I teach at an inner-city school where I have a very diverse group of students. My classes have special education as well as English as a second language. They are not only educationally diverse but economically and socially diverse as well.

Each week, my students get to perform a cooking lab.

For many students, this is the highlight of their day.

My Project

Some of my students REALLY struggle with math. I know I did when I was a student. I try to teach cross curricular lessons in my cooking class. To understand how measuring cups work, you really need to understand fractions.

My students learn best when the activity is hands on.

Help me provide magnetic pizzas and fraction games so my students have the opportunity to have a visual of what 1/3 or 3/4 actually looks like.

I believe by having these visual aids, my students will be more accurate when measuring during our weekly cooking labs.
