My students need fraction tiles in order to build a conceptual understanding of the value of fractions.

Fun with fractions seems like an oxymoron, as fractions are something that absolutely baffle my students. They seem confused at the thought of them each and every time. Imagine their "aha" moments when they realize that fractions go BEYOND pizzas...
My students are an absolute joy.
They attend a school that is extended school work so they began school almost three weeks before their peers, so we have had three weeks together so far. My students are wonderful, and have been off to a great start. We have talked about STAR values and they have blown me away with their ability to connect with their peers when given the instruction and the chance. I am more excited to work with them each and every day. That said, they have been left behind before, and there are few people that have showed interest in their education. We are trying to instill in them a desire to learn in order to create lifelong learners by getting them excited about the material they are learning.
My only concern is that we are quite far behind on areas that take an incredible amount of conceptual knowledge such as number sense. I know already that fractions will be a problem as we struggle with understanding the concept between regrouping in subtraction. I know that when it comes to fractions they will need something tangible to be able to work through comparing, simplifying and finding equivalent fractions. The fraction tiles I am requesting will allow my students to manipulate the tiles to internalize what 1/2, 1/3, even 1/12 truly looks like.
This is important because these students have not had manipulatives in a classroom before.
Providing them with tools not only helps to teach them about fractions, but it will also show them the thoughtfulness we have been talking about. It will show them people do care about their education beyond those that they interact with at school.
