My Students

Learning fractions from a book is difficult and boring. Fractions need to be touched, taken apart, and put back together to be fully understood. In order to truly learn fractions, my students need materials to help them master this difficult skill.

My students are a diverse group of kids with a wide range of abilities.

They are eager learners and they love to think of themselves as mathematicians. They are able to work hard to master new concepts, but fractions can be difficult for even the most mathematically able. They just need access to the right materials.

My Project

My students need fraction manipulatives. Fractions can be difficult for students! Learning fractions involves applying ones knowledge of multiplication and division, learning new vocabulary like "numerator" and "denominator," and wrapping your mind around the fact that a third is somehow larger than a fourth. Individual fraction bars and materials for fraction centers will offer the students tools to learn about fractions by using their eyes and their hands. Students will be able to look at the manipulatives to visually understand how an eighth compares to a tenth, and they can physically manipulate the materials to discover relationships between the fractional pieces.

By having hands-on activities, my students will understand that fractions are a real life skill, and not just something to try to learn in order to pass a test.

These manipulatives will help my mathematicians understand what they are learning.
