This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students enjoy using new media. They would love to get their hands "dirty" with some good, clean clay and ink. To see their excitement in learning as they make their own bowl, and clay animals or pull their first print from the printing plate is great fun.
My school is an elementary school in a low socioeconomic area.
Many of my students have basic needs that are not always met. They appreciate a smile and encouragement. We have a super staff that is willing to go above and beyond teacher roles to help our students succeed. When we can give them special experiences, such as working with clay and printmaking, it makes us all smile.
My Project
With the clay, my students can learn how to use their hands to create a bowl, and a little animal. They will learn that in ancient Greek and Roman times, people made their own pots to hold water, food and olive oil. Also, Ancient Egyptians would make little animals to accompany the kings in the Afterlife. They will learn, that if they do not wedge the clay before they make their project, air bubbles can burst the pot in the kiln, and if they do not attach parts of the animal with scoring and slip, they may pop off in the drying process.
With the printmaking supplies, my students will learn how to make a printing plate, and that the resulting pulled print will be a mirror image of their plate. They will learn that texture and pattern will make a print more interesting, and that they need to use the whole page.
My students will enjoy learning new techniques with this new media.
It will help them understand how prints are made and how important ceramics was to mankind to store supplies in the past. They will enjoy the experience of making a unique three dimensional pot and animal, and pulling their own multiple prints from their own designed printing plate.
