My students need resources, including a CD player, read-alongs and listening center skill sets, to build comprehension, work on reading skills, and building fluency.
The great Dr. Seuss said, "The more you read, the more you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." I want to encourage a love for reading. My students need more opportunities and a hands-on approach to literacy.
My class of first graders are a diverse population in a low-income area.
Over half of my class are second language learners. Many of my students are struggling at reading. They are a bunch of great children who want to succeed in school but they do not have good reading fluency and they are not comprehending what they are reading. Many do not have the resources available to practice these skills at home.
My Project
I would like to have a listening center where my students can hear what good fluency sounds like while following along with an actual book on Cd's. This listening center will have classic stories as well as new stories that they will be exposed to. Having these sets of read-along books will allow many opportunities to be revisited throughout the school day. At other times, students will work on comprehension skills, building vocabulary, and finding main points. I would use these materials during center time and this would make learning to read in a fun exciting way.
We have a love for reading but need the exposure and the practice.
This class needs a listening center filled with great treasured stories and other skill practices to work towards literacy. By donating materials towards a listening center to our classroom, you are giving my students opportunities to become better readers.
