The enrollment in our school is 1350 students, and we are one of the most diverse schools in our county. We educate students who are both socially and economically disadvantaged. 60% of students participate in the free and reduced price lunch program.
Most of my students are novice Spanish learners.
There are also several Spanish speakers in my classes. It can sometimes be a challenge to teach to both groups of students. The Spanish speakers benefit from already being familiar with the language and they often need to be given alternate tasks.
My Project
When elementary students first learn how to read, they are exposed to chapter books at their level. This concept can be carried over into learning a second language.
El Capibara con Botas (The Capybara with Boots) is a fun story written specifically for novice Spanish learners.
Students will read about Carlos the capybara's adventures to save the rain forest and overcome his fears of being different. Although my students are in high school, reading a goofy story about animals in the rain forest brings them back to when they were younger. They enjoy the silliness that the story provides and they learn so much without even realizing that they are learning. Through the process of reading together as a class, students will gain confidence to become more independent readers.
