My students need 150 copies of "Soft Rain" in order to begin an exciting grade-level reading program that will engage students in experiencing our history and heritage.
We are passionate about trying a new approach to get our students excited about reading while learning about social studies. We need whole grade level book sets so that all students can access the same curriculum simultaneously and know they are a part of something big.
Our students live in a rural setting and many of them have limited cultural experiences outside the classroom.
They want to learn and are enthusiastic about new experiences and we hope to acquire the resources to provide such experiences through this program. Our school is over twenty years old and the resources and technology available to the students are quite dated. Our students have struggled to achieve proficiency on the district and state mandated tests in reading. We are striving to develop new approaches to helping them grow in their reading comprehension skills and therefore be successful readers and learners.
My Project
Soft Rain tells the story of a Cherokee girl (and those close to her) who is the same age as our students. The novel walks the reader through the challenges and tragedy she faced as her family was forced to walk The Trail of Tears. We are developing a grade level, cross curricular unit to accompany reading the book that will expose the students to North Carolina history and how it relates to their ancestors. They will surely be touched and affected by realizing the struggles that those that came before them faced. We plan to elicit excitement throughout the grade level by involving all students in kickoff and culmination activities involving food and fun, theme decorated halls outside our classrooms, and small and whole group discussion and interaction as they all relate to the same text.

We feel we have a lot of potential to make positive change in reading growth at our school in fourth grade if we have the needed materials. We know this unit will build student excitement, raise their confidence as they participate in related activities and change their perspective on reading. There is no greater gift that a child can receive than to get lost in a good book.
