My kindergarten students come to school every day eager and excited to learn despite many challenges some are facing. I teach in a low income/high poverty school in the inner city. Eighty-three percent of our students receive free or reduced price. Many of my students are English language learners. Diversity is recognized, accepted and promoted in our classroom and school.

In our classroom creativity, innovation, and initiative are encouraged and celebrated. Children are given time to explore, make related discoveries, and experience enriched hands-on activities. High expectation of learning is set for all my students in an environment that is honest, respectful, caring and safe for all.

My Project
My students need rekenreks for an easy to use hands-on math tool for building number sense. A rekenrek is a visual model that aids in the discovery of number relationships and also helps develop a variety of strategies in understanding addition and subtraction.
Research has proven that students who are taught using hands-on teaching methods with manipulatives outperform those who are not.
One of my students favorite science units is life on the farm. Young children learn by imagining and doing and I therefore would like to be able to create a farm in our dramatic play area. The process of pretending builds skills in many essential developmental areas: social and emotional, thinking and language. By turning our dramatic play area into a farm students can take what they are learning in science and apply it as they imagine and play.
