Math can be exciting or scary. Oftentimes students who are struggling in math have little interest because it is "boring" or "not interesting." These skill builder magazines will boost interest during math workshop time.
Many of my students come from challenging home lives but, you would never know it!
We all work hard to make our classroom a safe place to learn and grow. Core grade-level math instruction is provided by myself. At the end of the day, all 5th graders participate in math workshop. During this time, students are pulled by At-Risk Intervention teachers for small group instruction. Other students remain in their homeroom for skill building and review from their homeroom teacher.
My Project
The Scholastic Must-Know Math 25 Activities to Build Key Skills is a fun, engaging math magazine aimed to reinforce math concepts and skills. I have purchased a few copies to preview and gather reactions from students. My students loved how math problems are presented - specific feedback was they liked the color, humor, puzzles, stories, mysteries, and cartoons.
These math magazines will be used to augment math workshop time. Students will work collaboratively in pairs or small groups to solve the math problems and puzzles. This will allow the teacher to focus on intense small-group instruction with other students. These magazines will also support reading and literacy education because many of the problems are presented in story form. This gives students practice in reading story problems and pulling out critical information.
My students love to learn.
While many students struggle in math it is because they have academic holes. These math magazines will make learning engaging and fun and help to close the achievement gap. It is important that students realize that math is a lifelong skill and that these foundational skills is the building block for higher mathematics. Thank you for considering a donation to this project and helping build a love of math!
