Every day, eager students fill the classrooms of our school. These students face many challenges outside the classroom walls, but come to school ready to learn and grow. As educators, it is our duty to teach these students academics, but also to grow them socially and emotionally.
Many of the students at my school have had limited opportunities to engage in tandem play with peers.
They want to have positive social and emotional experiences, and are begging to be shown how!
My Project
Many of my students come to me each morning with their plates full and heads spinning. Their favorite and most needed part of the day is what we call Morning Tubs. This is a half hour every morning where their only responsibilities are to eat breakfast and play. They play with their peers in unguided, hands-on, creative play. The items I've requested through this project will allow for more variety during this beloved time of day - a time of day that allows my kids to press reset - to shake off their worries and prepare for a great day at school.
While they may seem like just toys, they are really opportunities for collaboration, creation, stress-relief, and friendship-building.
Students will explore, revise, and work together with items like play-dough, geostix, and magformers. They will pretend play with their peers in a make-believe grocery store. They will transform the classroom into a restaurant. They will take on the role of the teacher in "play school". Students will use the requested items during morning tubs, indoor recess, and other opportunities for free play - growing in their peer relationships, creativity, and STEM skills all the while.
