Our school of engineering is a public school with a learning environment focused on the integration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) designed to help students learn how to solve real-world problems.
It is one of 171 schools in the county and serves 400 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
Of those students, 75.3% have received free/reduced-price lunch since 2009, 29.1% of students are considered as limited English proficient, and 12.6% are identified for special education. The number of AIG students has remained low, especially since 2010, with less than 15 students identified. In 2013, 58% of students scored at or above grade level on reading end-of-grade tests. Our under-served subgroups include Black, Hispanic, economically disadvantaged, and limited English proficient students.
My Project
Students from kindergarten to fifth grade will benefit from these classroom games. Each day students visit the intervention classroom to receive focused reading instruction. They've grown exponentially due to their hard work and persistence!
These students are resilient and are working very hard to overcome pandemic learning loss.
My students will use the games to practice decoding (word reading). I will use the waterproof paper and credit for Teachers Pay Teachers, to print out specially designed cards for the games, which have the words following the specific decoding skill they are working on. This will help the students to get extra practice on tricky skills or review old skills in an engaging way.
