My Students
As a school-based provider of speech therapy, I work with many diverse students ranging from grades Pre-K to eighth grade. My students have an array of disabilities and disorders, which include and are not limited to, Autism, Sensory Processing Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability, Speech and Language Impairments, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and varying Muscular Dystrophies. These students come from families of varying income levels and cultural backgrounds. Some of our students come from military families as well . In order for these students to meet the grade level expectations, they require modifications and accommodations to access the curriculum.
My students suffer from various disabilities and issues that may hinder their ability to effectively communicate their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas, as well as actively participate in the large classroom setting.
My Project
As a school-based therapist and related service provider, it is my professional goal to provide all students with the best possible education to ensure a successful future for themselves.
Children need movement and flexible seating options to maximize their learning throughout the long 6 ½ hour school day.
My students have a strong desire to interact with their peers and express themselves to adults with ease and clarity. Many of the students who have difficulty with language skills, also exhibit delays with motor skills as well. These students benefit greatly from flexible seating options, which will work on their core, balance, posture, and strength, while at the same time increasing focus and attention. Because the students have disabilities that cause them to have difficulties with attention, physical movement is incorporated and integrated into our therapy activities. The chance to sit on an yoga ball or stool allows these students the ability to get the constant physical movement while completing their required assignments.
