I am a math coach at an elementary school. I work with students in first to fifth grade and teachers from kindergarten to fifth grade. I would like to help implement Fun Fridays once a month for all math classes. During Fun Fridays students would do hands on math activities during the day rotating to all teachers doing different activities with each teacher. This would benefit students by having the opportunity to touch math and learn math through activities rather than through the traditional paper/pencil work. For Fun Fridays to be successful teachers need to have manipulatives in their classroom for students to use. These manipulatives will range from dice and counters to fraction pieces and measurement tools. Fun Fridays will benefit all students in our school which is a little more than 600 students. I believe it is imperative for kids to get a solid foundation in math skills in the elementary school. Being able to explore math using hands on activities is key to creating a solid foundation and the belief that math is fun!
