I teach in a second grade special education inclusion classroom at a Title 1 school in Hawaii.
Students in my class have a variety of needs and challenges. Each student come with a variety of strengths and needs. Many of them struggle with disabilities that place them at a disadvantage. Often times, students benefit from many hands on experiences to help solidify concepts that are taught as well as express their creativity.
My Project
Sitting at a desk for 4-6 hours is difficult for anyone! Flexible seating allows students to find more comfortable age-appropriate options to sit in for extended periods of time. Even with brain breaks and wiggle breaks included in the day, students are expected to sit and attend to instructions or sit and work independently for long periods of time. Our class has begun to provide for different seating options for different types of learners. We have wobble chairs that provided subtle movement and standing chairs for students who just cannot sit for long periods.
Students are more focused and involved in their learning when they are in an environment that accommodates their developmental needs.
With what we already have in the classrooms, students are much more focused and able to get the support they need during instruction. These new floor desks will allow students to complete independent work or take assessments while sitting comfortably. The weighted lap pad will allow students to receive the sensory input that allows them to focus on their work.
