Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom consists of a wide diversity of learners from different backgrounds. I teach middle school mathematics intervention classes as well as financial literacy. I teach semester courses (my students change at the end of the second quarter) 5 periods a day with an average of 25 students in each class. My students speak Spanish, English, French, Creole, and many other languages. The socio-economic background of my students is reflected by our 97% free or reduced-price lunch rate...but this doesn't hold them back. They are enthusiastic, dedicated and truly excited about learning in my room. We not only learn about math but we also learn about life. I teach my students about the importance of math and financial literacy and how it directly affects their lives now and always.
Teaching in an urban, inner-city school with students from all over the world with varying education levels, proves difficult to help them achieve grade level expectations.
"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." -Dr. Seuss
Please help me to help them find their personal, positive direction to steer towards!
My Project
Do you remember sitting in your middle school classroom? Do you remember how awkward and uncomfortable those chairs/desks were? I do. It was horrible. Some days I couldn't concentrate because I was so uncomfortable. My students face these problems every day.
We all come in different shapes and sizes and should all feel comfortable in school.
Some students are too tall or too short, too heavy or too thin to fit into the desks the school provides. I have had students, on 3 separate occasions, actually fall through the desk because the legs on it gave out. Not only is this dangerous, but it is also very embarrassing for these middle schools kids. I would like to create a "cozy corner" for my students to be able to relax and do their work without any unnecessary distractions.
The corner will have comfortable and flexible oversized bean bag chairs, hard storage ottomans to store small group supplies inside, a fun handprint area rug and a mathematics clock. Please help me make their school lives a little more relaxing and comfortable.
