My classroom is full of loving, engaged, and energetic five and six-year-olds! For most of my students, this is their first schooling experience. Every student comes to school with their own learning backgrounds and abilities!
We are a very diverse, STEAM-based charter school where my students enjoy a variety of hands-on learning activities to prepare them for their futures.
In our classroom, we emphasize the importance of collaboration, group work, and social/emotional development. Because of this, our students benefit from having a comfortable work environment. We try to provide many fun activities in a space that is as comfortable as their own home!
It is well known that flexible seating in a classroom positively encourages physical and social/emotional health. Sitting in a standard chair for long periods of time can have serious consequences, especially on young learners. My students have some options for flexible seating already including two-scoop rockers, two beach chairs, clipboards, and a few pillows. We are asking for more flexible seating options to increase our student's love of learning.
Flexible seating in Kindergarten puts students in charge of their own learning and allows for independence and self-empowerment.
Having these other options will really enhance my student's classroom experience. My school recently purchased awesome dry erase tables that allow for flexible learning. Because some students work best at a traditional table and chair, I will allow them to use the resistance foot bands. Some students may choose to also work at a table but may require other options such as stools (which also encourage good posture!)
Other students may work best while standing, which is why I included the adjustable height standing table. Donut exercise training balls, portable lap desk/writing tables, and floor square cushions allow for flexible floor seating that can be used anywhere in the classroom!
I have observed how allowing these choices already improve their engagement and stamina during reading and other independent activities, so I am eager to see what a whole class flexible seating option looks like!
