My Students
My students are amazing! Many of them are risk takers in the language classroom. They are full of questions about language and culture and love to get up and act out French stories & vocabulary. So much learning happens through movement. In today's culture of distractibility, it is more important that ever to have brain breaks where kids get up and move about the room. Dancing, singing, acting, active brain breaks- all make our French class one of the favorite places to be during the school day for many of my students.
My school has over 1/3 low income students who are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom.
I am confident that by allowing my classroom to be full of safe & meaningful movement throughout our class time, my students will be more successful in both my class, and their entire school day! I would like to set up my classroom with a semi-circle or a circle of chairs, and free up much needed space by removing the current tables in the room.
My Project
Current research in language learning supports students' learning new vocabulary and phrases through movement. A common approach to language teaching is called Teaching Proficiency through Reading & Stories. In this approach language must be comprehensible to the students, and there is a lot of acting out of stories. In addition, current brain research shows students need frequent brain breaks to maximize learning, these also involve movement.
For these reasons, I am looking to create a classroom which maximizes the space available for students to move about, while also helping middle-school students feel safe & organized.
My students' learning will increase with the ability to move freely about the classroom during all of our fun language learning experiences. With these chairs, they have a special, individualized place to put their stuff. They also have a nifty place for writing, or placing their digital devices if need be.
