This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
“Inclusion begins not with the assumption that students have to earn their way into the classroom with their behavior or skills. It begins with the right of every child to be in the mainstream of education, perhaps with modifications, adaptations, and support. Full inclusion requires teachers to think about all aspects of their classrooms—pedagogy, curriculum, and classroom climate.” -Mara Sapon-Shevin, Professor of Inclusive Education from Syracuse University
“We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought." Franklin D.
Roosevelt
My students live in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country. Many of them are English language learners and students who receive special education services in an Integrated Collaboration Teaching (ICT) setting. Students with disabilities who receive ICT services are educated with age-appropriate peers in the general education classroom.
These scholars are so motivated and eager to learn. Despite their circumstances, they are in school every day ready to take on the challenges. A large percentage of my students live in unstable housing conditions in the Bronx.
My Project
Field day is a great way to drive home the message that it’s never too soon to adopt healthy habits in an effort to improve overall health and prevent sickness.
The activities and educational materials provided on field day teach students and their families how to make healthy choices about nutrition and physical activity.
These healthy behaviors have a huge impact beyond sickness; they can help kids feel better and perform better in school. More importantly, kids who establish healthy habits early on in life are more likely to lead healthy lives as adults. These behaviors will not only help prevent sicknesses but also other serious diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The research topic suggestions provide students an opportunity to take a more in-depth look at healthy lifestyles and the science behind it.
Field day also fosters team building. Through friendly competition, our school can come together for a cause that touches everyone. In addition, it is a great way to build school spirit and to establish closer relationships among teachers, students, and parents. Furthermore, field day provides an opportunity to make a positive statement about the contributions young people are making in society today.
