Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, and many of them have unique needs. The student population is considered the vulnerable youth population because over 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and over 40% are considered homeless. The students have been referred to our school from the comprehensive high schools because they are credit deficient, have been expelled, or for social or emotional reasons like social anxiety in a big school setting, or escaping bullying. As a result, we go out of our way to provide the students with hands-on learning, service learning opportunities, and relevant curriculum.
I am requesting a class set of more contemporary novels, Children of Blood and Bone, to encourage my students to read an entire book for the first time. I hope to try this new curriculum and link this fiction to some of my previous mythology classes. This is an engaging story that can get students to read the rest of this series.
Tomi Adeyemi is a great role model for women and students of color, encouraging them to read and write.
Children of Blood and Bone is great to battle expectations of usual settings and main characters by having this story take place among teenagers of color. The addition of magic makes this a fun read for my students as well.
