One of the problems with struggling readers is that, because they are reading at a level below their peers, they become embarrassed reading books written for younger children. Fortunately, I have found that Mo Willems' Elephant & Piggie series is popular with third graders of all reading levels.
My students attend an incredible school that also faces the challenge of being a Title school, as a majority of its families face socio-economic issues.
I have a wonderful class that enjoys books, but unfortunately, many of my students are reading well-below the third grade level.
My Project
I am requesting multiple copies of books from Mo Willems' Elephant & Piggie series. These easy-to-read books have a charming sense of humor, while also teaching (or reminding) students about how to be a good friend. I have some copies of this series in my class already, and have found them to be popular with students of all reading levels. My students find them engaging, as evidenced by how frequently the books circulate throughout the classroom. I hope by obtaining multiple copies of these books, many of my students will be able to read them at once, thus improving their reading abilities while simultaneously opening their eyes to how exciting reading can be!
Third grade is an extremely important year in a child's intellectual development.
They need to end the year able to read chapter books, so they can tackle the projects and reports that will inevitably be required of them in fourth grade. Part of getting them to this level involves making them excited to read, so they can catch up to where they need to be. This project gives students who may otherwise fall by the wayside an opportunity to become better and more motivated readers.
