Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of our amazing 3rd graders come from low-income households and/or trailer homes. They receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of these children lack a quiet place to read or have responsibilities at home that make it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school. Yes, 8 and 9-year-old students from our school often live like this. This was the case before Hurricane Harvey and now it may be even more difficult for many of them. Somehow, these wonderful students still manage to come to school with a smile and hug to give.
My Project
With just about every subject in school, my third grade students will need to have a composition journal that is their own. These composition books become their subject "journals" full of interactive organizers, reading responses, charts, etc. They help make that learning fun and more importantly for me, ORGANIZED. At the end of the school year, they also serve as great take home momentos what they learned during their school year.
All that being said, why shouldn't the students' composition journals reflect their own personal interests or style?
Many of our students can not always afford to bring all the listed supplies on the annual school supply list, much less afford cool and neatly decorated ones. I know if they had composition journals with that extra touch of love and style like these have, learning would be that much more fun on the day-to-day.
While a fun cover on a composition journal can seem small or insignificant to many, to our students or "Little Gators," these sorts of extras are a huge in their world.
