This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I teach 1st grade in California at a school mostly composed of Hispanics and students with a high poverty rate. I am now entering my third year teaching and have noticed that many students I have taught have no books at home. 1st grade is the year students are expected to turn sounds into words and many have nothing at home to help them with that. On average, 15 of my 20 kids have come in behind in reading already (as six-year olds!). Many of them believe themselves to be 'bad' readers and have little enthusiasm for reading. It is very hard to bring them up to speed without books at home. What I'm asking for is 20 copies of Dr. Seuss' classic 'One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,' one for each of them to take home and keep as a gift. This book is perfect for developing readers as it works repetition, phonemic awareness, rhymes, digraphs (the 'sh' sound) and hammers away at short vowels. All of these are essential for this grade-level. Plus, it's a fun book for them, filled with exciting pictures and colors. It's easy enough for them to read but hard enough to push and develop their skills. And, again, for many of them this will give the excitement and enthusiasm of owning their very first book. This will also provide an opportunity to have a class read-aloud together, as everyone will have a copy at the same time. This will be extremely valuable and give an opportunity for reading comprehension lessons or even art and PE. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Eric
