My school is in a diverse neighborhood and has a population of almost 1,000 students. We have an incredibly supportive community and good parental involvement, though many of our students are from low-income families.
My students are wonderful, busy, energetic, little people.
And we are so fortunate that our wonderful old school is located in a big historic neighborhood, where many of my students live. However, as in all older schools, that means most of our classrooms are furnished with well-worn desks and chairs. I would love to update my classroom and give my students alternative seating for their desks, our collaborative learning table, and in our classroom library.
Presently my classroom has older traditional desks and chairs. Through Donors Choose, some of our educators have been able to provide their students with new seating options. I have observed how much they enjoy seats that “wobble”, “squish”, or rock. Those teachers report that most of their students are actually more engaged in learning when their seating gives them a chance to wiggle a little. I’d love to give my active little learners fun, new seating!
My Project
First graders are busy little people with a lot of energy. They are inquisitive and love to learn. But sitting still all day long at a traditional desk and chair doesn't always make the best place for active youngsters. Having alternative seating, such as wobble seats, wiggle cushions, colorful carpet circles, and chair fidget bands give these young learners opportunities to move around, without being distracting to others in the classroom. A classroom can have the best books, all the necessary supplies, and excellent curricula, but if the furnishings don’t accomodate the needs of the students, it is not the best environment for them. I hope to be able to create a classroom that the children are eager to come to every day!
