I teach a total of 60 juniors and seniors who all have a deep understanding of the complexities of the words around them. They care deeply about the social justice issues that impact them and their communities, including but not limited to environmental justice, community health, racial injustice, gender discrimination, and poverty as well as how these intersecting issues lead to violence.
Not only are my students aware of these complex issues, but they are also problem solvers, healers, critical thinkers, and most importantly, activists.
Many of them work within their communities to bring people together to think of and facilitate creative ways to resolve these issues.
My Project
My students and I are currently in a distance learning model, and while we are not sure when we will be returning to the classroom in person I would like to ensure the space is updated and ready for my students! My classroom consists of many outdated books and decor I inherited from other teachers, garage sales and book sales or spent my own money on.
I would like to create a classroom space that truly reflect the unique facets of identity my students carry, as well as establish a warm and welcoming learning environment for them.
