Most of my students come from a rural low income community and all qualify for Special Education assistance through an IEP or Individual Education Plan.
Despite their challenges, my students are awesome and love hands-on activities.
They are receptive and eager to learn. There are little things that help them succeed each day.
From moving around in the classroom to more hands-on learning, our school strives to create the best possible learning environment for our students but like anyone else, we are limited by our budget.
My Project
For years, students have been given "old" Science materials that are outdated and don't relate to the growing Science standards. With STEM, all students can be scientist or engineers when creating projects. For example, all of my students are identified with at least one of the 13 categories of special education. With that, a few of my students have additional needs with fine motor skills, vision impairment, etc. One of the items in this project are microscopes that provide enlarged images of the subjects they are focused on so the students are able to see the subject on their Chromebooks or iPads. Along with being able to see the pieces, they too can be "engineers", because they will be able to see the pieces on the larger screen.
My students have been under served when it comes to Science and hands-on activities.
With the building blocks, wooden building blocks, the magnetic block STEM Educational tiles, EMIDO building discs Sets, National Geographic Construction Engineer sets, and the other hands-on items that are listed, my students will be able explore the world of STEM and enhance their problem solving skills both while working individually and in small groups. All the items that are listed for this project will help increase higher order thinking skills for my students which sometimes can be difficult for them but having something hands-on and engaging, my students would be excited about learning.
