Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at Logan Academy of Global Ecology are eager and willing to learn. They live in crowded housing in an urban neighborhood. The majority of the students acquire English as their second language, and they are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
We know STEAM activities encourage students to find solutions to solve problems.
The students at Logan Academy of Global Ecology need and desire the opportunities and materials needed to develop their engineering skills. Logan Academy of Global Ecology students are our future musicians, engineers, inventors, and decision makers. Most students do not participate in any extra curricular activities outside of their school day. There are few community opportunities that they are able to participate in, due to financial constraints or parental involvement.
They are an eager and creative bunch, and they are willing to try new things!
My Project
This project brings music, engineering, and mathematics together.
Students will use the Makey Makey Invention kits and Play-Doh to design musical keyboards they can use to practice their knowledge of musical notes.
They will write songs using whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes. Understanding fractions is a difficult key math concept in 3rd and 4th grade. Students will be able to make a connection between musical notes (whole 1/1; half 1/2; quarter 1/4; etc.) and the fractions they work with during Math time.
The students will be able to play their songs on the pianos that they made themselves. How cool is that?
