Kindergarteners are beautiful blank slates and amazing little sponges. They are naturally curious and inquisitive. I am lucky in that I get to help shape their foundation and help ignite their love of learning.
My incoming kinders will get to ask questions, explore, experiment, collaborate, and engineer some pretty awesome things.
They will be the first official group of students to experience all 6 years of their elementary education in a brand new science magnet school.
My students abilities are as diverse as their backgrounds. Last year my classroom was comprised of almost 50% English language learners. I am excited to see how how this new STEAM environment transforms their learning experience and transcends the language barrier!
My Project
Last year was pivotal. I began transitioning my teaching and thinking toward next year's transition to a STEAM (science) magnet school. As soon as I began incorporating daily science, my classroom transformed. Students were fully engaged--they were writing more, collaborating more, and sharing more of what they were learning.
The pre-planning and implementation allowed me to see where my holes were--leveled science books were needed, engineering challenges for fast finishers, and art supplies for a creation station.
An old school, mercury-filled outside thermometer was of no use to students who didn't understand how to read a thermometer. I had plenty of ideas on how to transform their learning environment, but no funds to make it happen. That, hopefully, is where you come in.
