Jasmine, Tyrone, and Taylor are three typical students at the school I teach in. These students have so much potential, and I believe that they can achieve great things. However, in our rural 87.2% poverty community, they do not have the adequate resources which will enable them to do this. Students often-times lack the needed resources at home in order to become true college and career ready individuals in an ever-growing technological society. They want to be able to have the resources they need to succeed and they are willing to take on the task of making this happen.
I asked my students a simple question and allowed them to think and write down their responses. What do you feel are the greatest strengths and weaknesses we offer here at school? The overwhelming majority of these kids felt our greatest strength was the support they received from the faculty. However, they felt their greatest weakness was the inadequacy of the technology both in picture and sound that they need in order to be successful in a technology-driven society. This project allows students to take self-ownership in creating a learning environment that is enriched with technology that will allow them to become college and career ready individuals.
In Their Own Words
With the use of this computer, we will work towards creating projects that will display our STEAM skills become 21st century learners. We will use this to create ideas and projects that will promote our STEAM magnet school in the school, district, and community. By purchasing this computer, we will be able to produce quality projects including recorded video productions highlighting our STEAM status in the district which can be shared with the school, district, and community.
I want to help my classroom have this computer for our classes to be able to interact on the World Wide Web to become real 21st century learners. We can create multimedia presentations within the school to promote our STEAM school in our community and service organizations to promote our school and its success. My teacher does a good job of spreading the word about his DonorsChoose.org projects, but this is our DonorsChoose.org project. My classmates and I are taking ownership of this to prove that if we set our minds to something; we can do it! We are organizing a silent auction to help fund this project along with creating and passing out fliers to our families and community.
This project is extremely important to me because our classes need the ability to create projects that can be shared in order to promote our STEAM Magnet school in our rural Title I community. This equipment will allow our history class to become equipped with the latest technology that is so important for us to become successful college and career-ready individuals. Many of my friends give up, but this project allows me the opportunity to succeed in something I set my mind to.
