My students are third graders in Bossier City, Louisiana. They have an amazing spirit and energy and they deserve the best education I can provide for them. Bossier City is the home to Barksdale Air Force Base, the largest AFB in the country.
Even though they are only 8 and 9 years old, they each have their own unique personality.
Of my 21 students, four are gifted, and five receive special services for art or theater. Seven students have parents serving in the military, and two have parents going through a divorce. Several have to be encouraged to stay on task, and one has to be reminded that everything doesn't have to be perfect. Three play baseball, one is in ballet, four play soccer, and two take piano lessons.
However, even with all these differences, they are alike in many wonderful ways. They all love when we sit together in our reading circle and have classroom discussions. They love when we get to go outside for science, and they love when we get to do STEM activities on Fridays. The best thing they have in common is they all love to give me hugs as they walk out the door.
My Project
Louisiana recently adopted the Louisiana Student Science Standards, or the LSSS. Since these standards are new, we are lacking the appropriate resources.
By having our own Mobile STEAM Station, my students will have everything they need and more.
I have never considered myself a science teacher, but since the adoption of the LSSS I have enjoyed teaching science for the first time in my career. The new LSSS standards are more focused on phenomena, or the study of something extraordinary in nature. I find my self-scrambling to find the materials we need to have a meaningful learning experience. Students developing science and engineering based problem-solving skills is a key factor in them being prepared for the twenty-first century. Please help my students get the materials they need to be successful in our technology-driven world.
