Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These students are bright, inventive, adventurous, and curious. They are also very high needs. They come from a neighborhood that is poor and under developed and their home lives can be equally as difficult. Our school is a Title I, Tier I school where 100% of our kiddos receive free lunch. Our school also services the local children's shelter, where children are placed after being taken from their parents and awaiting foster care. Some of my students are hungry, some are cold, and some are afraid but they are all eager to learn.
It is my mission to not only educate them to the fullest of my abilities, but to give them a place that is comfortable and safe.
It is my hope that they leave my classroom with the skills and confidence to be successful members of their families, neighborhood, and society.
My Project
STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) activities encourage students to use their problem solving skills to find answers outside of the traditional box. These skills transfer directly to other aspects of their lives as they find creative solutions to everyday problems.
STEAM activities make learning more fun and engaging, while providing students opportunities to use what they learn in real world applications.
When students can see a real world reason for what they are learning, they are more likely to retain the information in a meaningful way.
These STEAM kits will connect aspects of geometry, spacial awareness, engineering design and science to a real world problem they can solve. The learning is extended by including a possible design modification and recording their findings. Students will discover a love for reading, writing, and math because they can see how it directly applies to their world.
