Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian in a suburban school in Texas. I am excited because this is my first year at a new school and my first year as a librarian! There are about six hundred students from Pre-K to fifth grade at this Title I school. 85% of the students are Hispanic and we have a 22% mobility rate.
We are proud of how hard the children work and want them to be successful!
Our school's mission is to provide the appropriate tools and strategies to ensure the success of every child.
My Project
After Hurricane Harvey devastated our city and state, our hard working students were ready to make up for the lost instructional time! As the school librarian, I am creating a Makerspace with STEAM materials. Students are so excited about what new materials they might find in this learning space. We need some more building materials for our future engineers. The Strawbees and the Magna Tiles give the students opportunities to build and create. STEAM activities give students a great sense of accomplishment and might spark an interest in engineering. I'm also super excited about adding a beginner needlepoint kit and latch hook kit to the space. These were some of my favorite activities as a kid and I can't wait to teach my students. I have a 4th grade lunch bunch group, and I know they will want to learn this craft. My students want to learn new things and the STEAM activities help them do just that!
