My students need sets of Touching Spirit Bear, The Call, and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind to build up their literacy skills and enhance the theme of our magnet program.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Books open your mind, broaden your mind, and strengthen you as nothing else can.” -William Feather...
To make our magnet programs an even greater success, teachers need the tools to teach. We need STEM and Police Academy instructional materials! Please help put one book in each child's hand.
Our students come from all over Los Angeles.
Some riding the bus 1 1/2 hours each way to get to our school because they want a better opportunity. We are 100% Title 1, with 100% love and dedication to learning. Our school has over 800 kids from over 800 different walks of life. No two are the same. But all deserve to have books in their hands to further broaden their minds.
My Project
As part of the Police Academy Magnet and STEM magnet, students need to have instructional materials that address the theme of the program. All of them learn the same core content through the state adopted textbooks. But not all of them have the same interests! That is why I want 3 different types of books that meet their reading levels and needs. I want to embed the 2 magnet themes into their history, English, math, and science classes. I want the kids to have a chance to read a variety of books at varying levels of ability and share what they have learned in literature circles and discussion panels. I want them to debate issues about personal justice vs social justice. Each book provides that, through the main character's actions. It is something they can all relate to.
I want the kids to have a chance to explore a variety of strong-willed characters and recognize how his/her actions can lead to the growth or failure of a society.
Students will be able to connect to these characters, the issues they face as teenagers, and can relate them to personal experience. Each relates to our magnets' themes. Each can help them understand why they our in our program, rather than at another school, and the vision we have to help shape their futures.
