Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead with tools for a Modern Education
Help me give my students a green screen to transport them in reading, science, and art. A few Ozobots for coding and additional robot tools for S.T.E.A.M.
My students come from a poverty-stricken agricultural community.
Here, many of them struggle with English as a second language, group homes, and financial hardships that many of us cannot imagine.
They are faced with a world of can’t.
Despite their hurdles, all of my 4th graders come to school with smiles and are eager to learn. We spend our class budget on basic supplies that my students and their families are unable to provide.
We start our day with a class promise. This promise is to each other, as we work collaboratively in our shared learning environment. In our room we learn to take both academic and personal risks without fear of failure. Our focus is on a growth mindset. While we have paper and pencils I want my students to experience more. I want my students to have a safe place that they can call their own. Here not only are their needs met, but their learning flows through active engagement and limitless creativity. We end our day reflecting on the learning tasks we have faced and how our classroom promise helped us each achieve our goals.
My Project
We will use these materials to truly integrate the components of S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics).
We will use the green screen with the DoInk app on our classroom Ipad (generously donated by previous sponsors) to transport our students to the jungle, into rare art pieces, the California Missions, monuments, outer space, the bottom of the ocean, and anywhere else their imagination, research, and writing can take them.
This powerful tool will make learning engaging, hands on, and most of all it will allow all students to take ownership and personalize their classroom experience. We will transport ourselves into face paintings, into the habitats of our animal research, and even visit the California Missions for some project based learning, with a twist!
Our kid coders and members of our S.T.E.A.M. Team (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) will be able to take coding to the 3-d with these kid friendly robots. These learning tools take the abstract idea of coding and make it concrete for all learners. Coding and robotics is not only for the gifted students with these compact robots. Not only will we use them in the classroom we will use them with our Kindergarten and 2nd grade buddies as well. We believe learning is a community effort as we assist our younger scholars in learning and exploring technology.
The additional materials such as the can robots, small motors, and Makey Makey are for additional units into science and the engineering process. Of course we keep our artist hats on as we combine these tech based tools with a creative spin. Help bring a modern education in our classroom and into the hands of our young learners!
