Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In August I will begin my first-year teaching as a 2nd-grade teacher at a Title I school in South Carolina. I cannot wait to begin this adventure with my first group of sweet second graders, and I look forward to being able to provide them with all the resources that they need in order to succeed!
My students are a diverse group, and they require a variety of learning opportunities to meet their needs.
Our school is 100% free and reduced lunch and 70% of our school are Hispanic. As a one-to-one school, my students are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to utilize technology every day. Along with technology, I hope to include many S.T.E.A.M. opportunities and engaging integrated units. By donating you will make my classroom an exciting and engaging place for my students to come to learn every day!
My Project
Teaching today’s students requires a variety of creative instructional practices that meet their needs and interests. We all know that children love LEGOs, so why not incorporate them into daily classroom activities?
With LEGOs, the possibilities are endless; and LEGOs will make a huge difference in my day to day instruction.
With these bricks, I plan to make learning engaging for students in a variety of ways. For example, I will use the LEGOs as math manipulatives. This will be accomplished as students will use LEGOs to build numbers, add and subtract, compare numbers, create fractions, etc. I also plan to incorporate LEGO bricks in literacy and writing instruction. Writing is much more fun when it is authentic, and what is more authentic than getting to build your story? My students will use the bricks to create story starters, and hopefully, make "movies" based on their own writing! Finally, LEGOs can easily be integrated into Science and Social Studies instruction as well. For example, I have requested the Chain Reactions kits to help my students visualize force and motion and to incorporate more S.T.E.A.M. activities into my instruction.
I hope that you can visualize the benefits of using LEGOs in classrooms, and I hope that you will be willing to help make my S.T.E.A.M. dreams come true!
