I am a special education teacher at a residential/day treatment school which services students with severe emotional and psychiatric disabilities.
We are a special needs school.
My students, ages 8 through 10 years, come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. They struggle with their emotions, social skills, and daily life. Like all kids, they need love and support. They need encouragement and to be motivated.
Given all the challenges in their lives, my students are great, loving, and caring students. They accept new challenges daily and work hard to complete each task. They are eager to learn, but they need as many tools as possible. Given the right tools, my students will make significant improvements in learning and daily life skills.
My Project
I am very excited to incorporate STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) projects into my classroom. However, I do not have the technology necessary to do so. The students in my class are very bright and interested in technology and science. Incorporating STEAM would give them an advantage in the fields of technology, engineering, science, art, and math.
I am very passionate about the long-term effects that STEAM work will have on my kids, our community, and our country.
My students would love to have two Samsung Chromebooks to share and use to access STEAM apps and websites during the small group portion of our schedule. We have access to many fantastic STEAM apps and websites such as Minecraft and LittleBits Invent, but we are in need of two more reliable, working Chromebooks to effectively use these programs. We are slowly trying to attain a classroom set of Chromebooks.
