My students need technology with an iPad as we are transitioning into a STEArtM campus this year to create digital portfolios, explore graphic design, paint, and produce animation with apps.
Our students come to us from a variety of backgrounds. They are 40% Caucasian, 36% Hispanic, 18% African American and 4% Asian and mixed races. We serve a population of students with over thirty percent coming from low income socioeconomic backgrounds. Our middle school serves over eleven hundred students.
We are a Texas strong community, having endured Hurricane Harvey where many of our students were affected by heavy flooding in the area.
They have banded together to provide food, clothing and toys to those in need and to clean up our roads with trash pick up.
Our students are involved in many different aspects of learning. We are an AVID demonstration campus integrating college readiness at the middle school level. We have a Gifted and Talented program to extend student-led learning. Our school is also extending our STEAM program and encouraging students to guide their own learning by creating and experimenting in the arts.
My Project
This year at my school, we are starting a STEAM program that students applied to be in. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders and learners of the twenty-first century!
Students need current technology that the iPad offers for digital portfolios, creating stop motion animation and the graphic design opportunities offered with apps.
While quite a few have smart phones, some have no data or even worse, no phone at all. This would allow all students to be successful .
