Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most come from low income families where reading and other educational materials are "luxury" items.
Additionally, our class contains children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Many come from homes where English is not spoken or not spoken fluently, some are in the foster care system, and quite a few have physical and/or speech challenges to overcome. Fortunately, at this age, all students benefit greatly from experiences and touchable, movable manipulatives, so I try to provide these opportunities as much as possible. When you donate to our classroom, you are changing lives! Thank you!
My Project
This project is designed to bring the worlds of Science, Music, and Mathematics to life in fun and exciting ways for my energetic first graders. Boomwhackers will allow my students to experience the relationship between science and music first-hand. Their colorful, melodic charm will engage even the most reticent learner as they explore the concept of sound. The special dice will help my students master math facts as they play games at school and home, while the oversized math visuals will help children more easily view and grasp new concepts when we are in a whole group setting. Currently, we do not have any thermometers in our room, nor do we have access to any. Having a class set of age-appropriate thermometers will greatly enhance each child's understanding of how this tool works, allowing him to personally assess the temperature throughout the year--What a fun way to learn science and math! Last, but not least, the Zoobooks library will take our study of animals and their habitats to a new level, providing a wonderfully illustrated, child-friendly resource.
