Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember being so excited for computer time when I was in school, which was limited to once a week playing "Number Muncher" or "Oregon Trail". Now I get to bring the excitement of new innovative technology to classroom's everyday as an Educational Technology Specialist.
I've been a classroom teacher for 10 years and stepped out of the classroom this year as a TOSA (teacher on special assignment) coaching and supporting teacher and classrooms regarding technology.
I support 5 elementary schools and 1 middle school and absolutely love what I do. Technology can be a "brave a new world" for some veteran teachers and sometimes they need a helping hand along the way and that's where I come in. I'm able to conference with teachers, demonstrate lessons for classes, and work with certain classes on long term projects. One of the things that I LOVE working with students with is coding!
My Project
Coding is the language of computers and by teaching students coding, in simple forms, it supports all other academic areas. I've been able to teach 100s of kids coding via code.org, and various apps but the Sphero adds a whole other dimension to coding. I love the revision process that coding instills in students. The opportunity to adjust our original thinking and try again. That is a skill that so many students lack and has to be built, so why not build it in the best way possible? By donating to this project you are affecting the lives of 1,000s of kids that I support. We would use the Spheros by creating mazes that the students have to program the Spheros to get through, kinetic energy transfer experiments, exploring area and perimeter, and slack line engineering to name a few.
Every day when I come to work I feel like the luckiest girl because I get to spend my day teaching kids and teachers new skills.
At the same time I feel the weight and responsibility of giving the students the best foundation possible to ensure their future academic success.
