This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing. They are a group of inquisitive, knowledge-hungry, gifted and high achieving fourth and fifth graders. This is notable especially because our school is Title I, meaning that over 87% of our students qualify for the free/reduced-price meal program based on the economic statuses of their families. In addition, many students are English speakers of other languages and may be the only English speakers in their households.
Despite the challenges they may face, my students maintain academic excellence year after year, as evidenced by their outstanding test scores and classroom productivity.
I am inspired by my students on a daily basis, and I do my best to inspire them back with a learning environment in which they can continue to thrive.
My Project
We all know how difficult it can be to function when we are hungry. A student who is thinking about their grumbling belly, certainly won't be able to put forth his or her best effort in school each day. Unfortunately for many students, hunger is a real issue. It can create anxiety, hinder productivity, and affect health and wellness. Providing my students with healthy snacks, such as pretzels, granola bars, fruit chews, cheese crackers, and graham crackers can alleviate some of the stress associated with not having enough to eat.
I do my best to find the classroom resources my students need to be successful in school, however sometimes what they really need are basic life essentials.
In years past, the snacks I have attained through Donors Choose were not only consumed in the classroom. I have sent them home with students who didn't have much in the kitchen cupboards. Additionally, last year when Hurricane Irma impacted our community, I was able to make snack care packages for my school families who were unable to secure supplies before the storm.
