Ms. Goodman from Washington DC is requesting materials related to food, clothing & hygiene through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need uniforms and warm uniform sweaters and jackets as we prepare for the colder months. We also need snacks and breakfast bars for students who are tardy and/or are not getting breakfast at home.

Each morning I am greeted by 25 smiling faces, eager to share and learn. My students attend a low-income, low-performing school in the Southwest region of Washington, D.C. Our school is vastly underfunded and we lack basic and necessary resources to support our students. My students are multiple grade levels behind in reading and math and are in need of intensive instruction and support.
Despite the many challenges and obstacles they face, my students have an enthusiasm and determination to succeed.
Each of my students adds their unique strengths and personalities to our classroom family. Our classroom is a second home for us all, where we learn to be kind, compassionate and thoughtful, where we are brave risk takers, imaginative readers, creative scientists, and inquisitive mathematicians.
According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we must first have our basic physiological needs met before we can meet other needs and requirements. These basic needs include food, clothing, shelter and sleep. Many of my students are not having these basic needs met, coming to school hungry or without warm clothing.
Without these basic needs being met, how can I expect them to be able to come to school and focus on learning or perceiving through difficult academic tasks.
Having breakfast cereals and bars available for students and snacks for the afternoons will help my students gain the energy and feelings of care that they need to be able to focus and learn.
Additionally, having additional and warm uniforms and uniform appropriate sweaters and sweatshirts will provide them with additional feelings of safety and comfort. Providing students with these important resources also develops a sense of trust and shows students that school is a safe place where they are cared for.
