My students are in an urban vocational high school. They range in ability levels, language fluency, and unique learning needs. My school offers different pathways for students that include: welding, automotive, diesel, building construction, CNC machine operating, and CADD. My students are hardworking, kind, and motivated to seek employment during and after high school in their chosen field of study.
Being a teenager comes with its own sets of challenges, but my students face so many more obstacles than that.
Many of the students I teach come from difficult home situations and financial hardships, all while trying to obtain and complete internships at shops in their trades. They have overcome many challenges. Despite these obstacles, they are a joy to teach and I couldn't ask for a better group of students.
My Project
In today's society, cell phones are one of our most useful tools. It's like having a laptop at our fingertips at all times. They are useful for young adults in that they help them keep time and schedules with alarms, obtain information instantly, access e-mails, and communicate with loved ones. However, they can be very distracting in the classroom. As an English and Language teacher in a trade school, technology is used regularly throughout lessons in most subjects. Most communication at the school-level is done through an electronic grade book or e-mail.
Technology is appropriate when we are using it to enhance instruction, but it can hinder learning when students are constantly connected to the social aspects of it, such as waiting for the next text message.
My project is to provide students with a safe place to charge their phones inside the classroom to minimize distractions during instruction. This will allow students to maintain a connection to their devices by having them in the classroom with them, increasing their sense of security about their devices. Cell phones will also be accessible in the event of emergencies or for appropriate incorporation into the lesson. Many students need a charged phone for safety purposes for the end of the school day. The majority of students at my school walk home or take public transportation, and having access to a phone is a safety precaution.
I want to help my students feel secure, while also maintaining their full attention and engagement in learning. This project will provide that perfect balance between cell phone distractions versus utility.
