The 31 first graders in my room are inquisitive and love to share their thinking. By incorporating OSMO Numbers Game with our iPads, and Boogie Boards, I hope to give my students a wide range of choices to express their thinking and inspire others to think outside the box.
Our students deserve child-centered activities that are engaging instead of busy work.
I am requesting OSMOs Numbers Game to add to the OSMOs we currently have and Boogie Board eWriters to use as during our math and literacy block. They will provide students with opportunities for independence and exposure to technology and creative expression. The independence of this process will not only help increase an interest in math and problem, but it will also teach a school-wide core value of responsibility since students will need to take care of the materials to keep them working for all students in the class. The OSMOs and Boogie Boards will foster collaboration while working on fine motor skills, spelling, problem solving, and spatial awareness.
My Project
Due to the large class sizes, we have to have an extensive number of centers to meet the needs of many different levels and abilities of students. The materials from this project will be used during the literacy block and math centers in which I meet with small groups of students. The remainder of my students need to be actively engaged during this time with meaningful activities. The requested materials will be used daily by 31 students. My students could work on core concepts at their level and have fun doing it!
The OSMO Numbers Game uses the OSMO readers we currently have. The students create unique ways to solve problems and work together, all while playing math games to improve mathematical reasoning and understanding.
The Boogie Boards are like a white board with a technology spin. The students can show their thinking by writing or drawing their answers. They will also be able to use them in small groups to answer comprehension questions, and practice spelling words.
Every year, I face the challenge of staying current and connecting what we do in the classroom to our students' personal lives and the world around them.
For many of my students, the world around them is filled with technology and high interest materials. Incorporating current technology in the classroom increases exposure and confidence. The OSMO Numbers Game and Boogie Boards will serve to increase reading ability and creative expression while keeping students focused on task.
