The students at our school have worked hard to excel and aim for excellence. We have brought our school grade up in the past few years while overcoming great odds. Each year the community supports where they can but, unfortunately, finances are tight in our area.
Compared to the rest of the county, our school has twice the average percentage of students with special needs, twice the average percentage of students who are homeless, and has the highest poverty rate in the county as 88% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
The students at EM Elementary are a beautifully unique demographic. Having the highest ESE, Homeless, and Title I populations in our district means we also have the most needs. Many of our students only eat food that is provided at school, either in the lunchroom, or in the form of care packages that the school sends home for the family on Fridays. Because of this, it is imperative that I have Healthy Snack Bars in the classroom for when students are hungry.
I never want a student's hunger to prevent them from learning!
Our snack supply containers are running extremely low, meaning that students who come in after the breakfast line closes may only eat lunch that day after our snacks run out. Running out of these snacks would be devastating for the students I teach! Thank you for supporting this basic need my students have!
