I am a third grade teacher on an Indian Reservation in Montana where we serve the most wonderful children! We have a very unique population in our school district. Many of our children are members and descendants of the Salish and Kootenai tribes, where heritage and culture run deep and strong and our children are our most valued blessing. In my classroom, our only school rule is, "Be kind!" Along with learning reading, science, technology, math, and other core subject matters, teaching children to be kind and treat each other with respect is the most essential lesson one can teach.
All of our K-12 students receive free breakfasts and lunches daily.
When children are raised in an area of low economics, it takes a community of caring parents, teachers, and mentors to bring hope, joy, and encouragement into learning environments for brighter futures. Our purpose and goal is to help every child learn that they can be and will be a vital part of their community, heritage, and culture by learning how to be successful students, excellent citizens, and future role models.
My Project
Promoting better focus for academics and strengthening little bodies for physical learning activities is the goal for our Fueling Little Bodies and Minds project!
It's hard to stay focused on your learning when your tummy is growling!
Sadly, this is a problem I see too often when working with my third graders. For some of my students, the first decision they make when they come to school each morning is, "Should I try to save some of my breakfast for later, because I know I'm going to be hungry?" That's not a decision an eight year old child should have to think about each day!
Research has shown, when children have enough food and nutrients in their systems to sustain them through vital learning blocks, they are able to retain more knowledge and they do better academically and physically. By providing snacks for my class, you are feeding their most basic need, hunger! Snacks like Pepperidge Farm Goldfish and Nature Valley Granola Bars are wonderful fuel sources that will help power my students through their day. We would greatly appreciate your help with our project!
