Our school is in a low socioeconomic area, and it is a Title I school. Our district provides only a few essential school supplies, and it falls to the teacher to provide some basic classroom necessities.
Many students come from homes with little or no parental support, and they need us to meet needs that go beyond state standards.
It takes more than worksheets to help students get ready to move on to a higher grade. They need to have their confidence built up and be secure in their ability to demonstrate proficiency in a subject. They are ready to learn and are waiting to be set up for success!
My Project
This school year, we do not have access to the water fountains at our school in an effort to mitigate the spread of the virus. Each student is asked to bring a water bottle to fill and drink from throughout the day. Students have breaks to drink from their bottles, just as they would have breaks to use the water fountain in the hallway.
About half of my students ask for disposable foam cups from which to drink water.
They either do not have a water bottle, or they have misplaced or forgotten it at home. I would like to give them a reusable water bottle with their name on it that can be used on a daily basis that will stay at school. This way, there is no forgetting it or losing it, and we are going green by utilizing reusuable water bottles instead of throwing foam cups in the trash all the time!
I also have some students that come to school without a healthy snack to eat at snack time. These snacks would be a nutritious energy boost for them!
