"To be a computer programmer," "to discover new things in the future," and "to make my mom proud" are just a few reasons why my students work hard every day.
The students I serve may come from different economic, social and ethnic backgrounds, but they all share the desire to thrive in the 21st century.
Each one is a child that is part of a larger sea of over 1,200 students at our school. They love explaining their ideas, they appreciate the feedback and enjoy defending and critiquing each other's work. As 6th and 7th graders, they are not only learning academic concepts lunchtime but also how to be contributing members of our society. In addition to math and science, these every day are tackling how to work productively with other people, gaining the skills to manage their time efficiently and collecting problem-solving skills. I hope to provide them with the tools and resources they need to soak up as much as they can and continue growing to reach their goals.
My Project
Hunger is an obstacle that many students face when coming to school. Some of my students wake up at 5 in the morning every day to catch the bus to arrive at school on time, meaning they miss breakfast or don't have time to pack a lunch. How can a student concentrate during a lesson when their stomach is rumbling? How can a child focus on learning to divide fractions if their mind is wandering to count down the minutes until lunchtime? Even students who make it to lunch, do not end up eating the school lunch because they don't like the food.
My students' growing bodies and minds are feening for sustenance!
By providing snacks that students enjoy like goldfish crackers, baked chips, and pretzels, I can fulfill some of my student's basic needs and help them succeed and reach their goals.
